Homeless man allegedly breaks into Staten Island home, is arrested by retiring NYPD lieutenant

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A Staten Island burglary suspect’s arrest became an unexpected final chapter in the 37-year career of a retiring NYPD lieutenant.

Alexander James, 27, is facing multiple charges after prosecutors allege he broke into a Huguenot home, stole clothing and a bottle of wine, then was arrested by Lt. Joseph Bell while Bell was off duty — just one day before the veteran officer’s retirement ceremony.
