Member of Carmel’s first city council reflects on 50 years of growth

When Jim Garrettson landed an interview to become a teacher at Carmel High School in 1964, he wasn’t sure where the small town even was.

He accepted the job, and 12 years later he was on the first city council to take office. He served until 1988, and since then has volunteered elsewhere in the city, including on the Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation board and the Carmel Clay Public Library board.
