California earthquakes hit three counties within hours

A magnitude 3.2 earthquake struck near Palomar Observatory this afternoon, rattling parts of both Riverside and San Diego counties. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake at 1:10 p.m., centered about 5 miles west of the observatory on Palomar Mountain northeast of Escondido, at a depth of roughly 8.5 miles. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

San Diego County residents reported feeling it in Escondido, Fallbrook, Ramona, San Diego, Valley Center and Vista, while people in the Riverside County cities of Murrieta, Temecula and Wildomar felt it too. For a quake this size, that broad felt radius is typical and rarely signals anything beyond a brief jolt.
