WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A 40-year-old Wichita man was found competent to stand trial on charges connected with an attack on two women that happened nearly three years ago, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office confirmed.
In court on Thursday, a judge decided that the case against Matthew Vess Smith can proceed. Smith is in the Sedgwick County Jail on charges of rape, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping.
The attack on Aug. 7, 2023, happened inside an apartment in west Wichita. The victims in the case were both in their 70s. A probable cause affidavit accuses Smith of physically assaulting both women, sexually assaulting one of them and stabbing the other…
