Students, parents and alumni at Central High School are speaking out on social media after discovering artificial intelligence-generated images throughout this year’s yearbook, igniting a heated debate about where AI belongs and where it doesn’t.
Students Say AI Took Away From Their Accomplishments
The controversy exploded on social media after graduates shared photos of the yearbook, pointing out that several pages, including the senior superlatives section, featured AI-generated cartoon versions of students instead of actual photographs. The artwork matched the yearbook’s Cartoon Network-inspired theme, but many felt it missed the mark.
One graduate, Serenity Stewart, called the AI portraits “uncanny” and said replacing real photos with AI recreations diminished the significance of honors students had earned. She also questioned why students are often discouraged or even disciplined for using AI in schoolwork while the technology was embraced in an official school publication.
