7 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Renovating My Bathroom

When my husband, Jordan, and I moved into our Asheville, North Carolina home in 2018, we loved so much about it: the high ceilings, the huge windows in the back den and dining rooms, the mid-century feel, and the way it was tucked into a bamboo forest and situated on a mountainside.

But the one problem area—truly, public enemy number one—was our primary bathroom. It was terrible. Almost nothing was aligned or perfectly square. The shower was prefabricated plastic and featured a swinging shower door that both dripped water all over the floor whenever opened and hit you in the back as you attempted to get out.

After eight years in this house, lots of saving, and tons of planning, we finally set our bathroom renovation for June 2025. It was my first renovation project, and I was our general contractor. I was armed with a can-do attitude and not much else…
