A Walmart employee was wounded Friday evening after a dispute between two men inside the Delaware County store escalated into gunfire, according to investigators. Officers responded to the Walmart at 50 McDade Boulevard in Darby Township shortly after 7 p.m. following reports of shots fired inside the building.
Darby Township Police Chief Michael Sousa told Fox News Digital that two men began a verbal altercation near the self-checkout area before one of them drew a handgun and discharged it without apparent aim at any specific target. A female store employee was struck in the leg — not either of the men involved in the dispute. She was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia and was expected to survive her injuries.
Shots Fired, Suspect Flees Scene
Investigators estimated between five and ten rounds were discharged inside the store, according to 6abc. Aerial footage showed broken glass inside the store in the aftermath. The gunman left before officers arrived and had not been apprehended as of Friday night.
Police briefly detained several individuals at the scene solely to gather information. No one else was taken into custody. Chief Sousa confirmed the Walmart and surrounding businesses were cleared, and authorities stated there was no ongoing threat to the public in the area.
