Fifth time’s the charm: After four failed attempts to shed its “territory” label, on Colorado finally became the 38th state on Aug. 1, 1876. Coinciding with America’s 100th birthday, the timing earned Colorado the lasting nickname “the Centennial State” — and now, its 150th birthday comes the very same year the nation is celebrating its 250th!
