The Yountville Sun is back, just weeks after disappearing, and its new owner is a billionaire business figure with deep ties to the Napa Valley town. Gary Jabara bought the community paper, which resumed publishing July 16, and says readers should expect its newsroom to remain editorially independent.
According to the Napa Valley Register, Jabara paid a five-figure purchase price for the paper and expects his investment to reach six figures during its first year. Editor Lisa Adams Walter will control editorial decisions, while Jabara plans to make the Sun available to guests at Estate Yountville, the sprawling hospitality property he owns.
A Second Life After A Sudden Shutdown
The newspaper announced on May 21 that it would pause publication while seeking a new owner, after Highway 29 Media said it could no longer keep its Napa County publications running. Hoodline previously reported that the shutdown left the Yountville Sun and Calistoga Tribune without an owner and put roughly a dozen local media jobs at risk.
The Sun returned less than two months later, restoring a news source that has covered Yountville for decades. The paper’s earlier farewell noted that it had published more than 1,300 editions since Sharon Stensaas and Oscar Rhodes launched it in 1998, making the pause feel less like a routine business change than a civic institution briefly going dark.
Why The Ownership Is Drawing Scrutiny
Jabara is not a distant investor parachuting into an unfamiliar market.
