STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In between IV pumps and treatments, children receiving care at the Brian Halpin Pediatric Cancer Center at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) were afforded a little extra joy this summer when members of the McKenna Foundation arrived with gifts as part of the nonprofit’s inaugural Christmas in July Toy Drive.
The celebration brought smiles to the faces of three young patients who are undergoing treatment at the pediatric cancer center, providing families with a special moment of fun and connection during their care.
The initiative was created as a way to help replenish the center’s toy supply during a time of year when donations are often limited.
Among the patients surprised during the visit was River, who celebrated his final chemotherapy treatment surrounded by his family, his care team and the unexpected excitement of a special delivery of toys.
While his last treatment marked an important day for his family, the celebration was part of a larger effort to bring moments of happiness to all children receiving care at the Brian Halpin Pediatric Cancer Center.
