Machesney Park man sentenced to 5 years in prison for firearms conspiracy

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill (WTVO) — A Machesney Park man has been sentenced to five years in prison for conspiring to straw purchase five firearms.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, 41-year-old Matthew Meyers conspired to make false or fictitious written statements to five federally licensed firearms dealers between 2022 and 2024.

Prosecutors said Meyers instructed another individual to purchase firearms on his behalf, knowing that the other person would falsely certify on federal forms that they were the actual buyer. Meyers then sold or transferred the firearms to others…
