With back to school in full swing here in Amarillo, it means the time has come to grab those school supplies, update the wardrobe, and mentally gear those kiddos towards another year of learning and growing.
You know what else it comes with? An immediate strain on your bank account. Sure, the school supplies haven’t really jumped in price or gotten out of control, but those clothes and accessories such as backpacks have definitely jumped up.
The Increase In School Supply Costs
Over the last year, we’ve seen general school supply prices rise by about 8-11%, which isn’t terrible on the surface. Those basic supplies like pencils, pens, notebooks, etc. are what are lumped into that general school supply category.
What HAS seen a big-time jump in prices are the things such as lunch supplies and backpacks. We’ve seen those prices fly up by 26%, and in some cases, as high as 40%. That’s a huge increase on items that were already the most expensive when school shopping.
