Recipients of the Purple Heart were honored Friday morning at the PA Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home in honor of Purple Heart Day.
The medal has been awarded to nearly 2 million men and women who were wounded or killed during military service.

As the nation’s oldest military award — originally known as the badge of military merit — the Purple Heart was first created by George Washington on August 7, 1782.
