GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — After swine influenza was detected in a pig that suddenly died at the Kent County Youth Fair on Friday, Aug. 7, area heath officials are now advising anyone who may have been around pigs at the fair to monitor for flu-like symptoms.
The Kent County Health Department (KCHD) said several other pigs at the fair developed signs of illness and were subsequently isolated inside of a barn closed to the public.

Though there have not been any confirmed cases of swine flu in people, the county health department is investigating reports of flu-like illness among some who were around the pigs.
“While we do not have confirmation of human infection at this time, we are taking this situation seriously and want people who may have been exposed to know what symptoms to watch for and what to do next,” KCHD Health Officer Dr. Adam London said. “Anyone who develops flu-like symptoms after having contact with pigs at the fair should contact the Kent County Health Department and let their health care provider know about their exposure.”…
