Mayor Aftab Pureval has introduced a modified version of an ordinance that would strengthen security requirements at public parking lots and garages.
The proposal follows months of discussions between city officials, parking operators and other industry representatives.
Pureval delayed consideration of the original proposal earlier this year after parking operators raised concerns about costs and some requirements. He now says the revised version addresses those concerns while keeping the city’s main safety priorities.
According to WVXU, the mayor said the changes aim to prioritize lighting and video monitoring as tools to deter vehicle break-ins. Pureval described the revised proposal as an effort to find a compromise with parking industry stakeholders.
The proposal comes as Cincinnati continues investing in cameras, lighting and other public safety technology. The city previously approved millions of dollars for broader public safety efforts, including street lighting and surveillance equipment.
