Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere are openly addressing the ongoing “nepo baby” conversation in Hollywood.
In Vogue’s September 2026 issue, Gerber-daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford-and Gere-son of actor Richard Gere-shared their thoughts on the scrutiny they face as they step into the spotlight together in Ryan Murphy’s FX series The Shards. Both acknowledge that audiences may be quick to judge their careers because of their famous family backgrounds.
“I’ve only ever been a nepo baby, and I’ve only ever benefited in my career from it,” Gerber, 24, candidly told Vogue. The model-turned-actress even admitted she sometimes questions whether other celebrity children have truly earned their opportunities, challenging them to prove why they deserve their roles.
Gerber also warned her The Shards co-star Gere, 26, that viewers likely won’t treat him the same way they would an unknown actor making his debut. “Unfortunately with this show, it’s not like you’re just any unknown actor and people will judge you as an unknown actor,” she said, noting that the extra scrutiny motivates her to work even harder.
Unlike Gerber, who started modeling as a child and has multiple collaborations with Murphy under her belt, Gere’s path to acting was less conventional. Raised mostly outside of Hollywood despite his famous father, Gere never set foot on a professional set until recently.
He initially pursued visual arts at Brown University and got involved in student filmmaking before a talent manager discovered his work. This led to auditions for The Shards and HBO’s Euphoria, landing him roles in both.
Gere recognizes that his family name complicates how people perceive his success. “I’m a very self-critical guy who would like to believe that my career’s going well for all the wrong reasons,” he shared, though his ongoing achievements have made that harder to accept.
Adding an intriguing layer to their collaboration, Gerber and Gere’s parents, Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere, were once married and famously graced Vogue’s cover together in 1992. More than 30 years later, their children now share the magazine’s cover and star opposite each other in The Shards.
For Gerber, escaping comparisons to her mother and the assumptions tied to her “nepo baby” status seems unlikely. But instead of avoiding the conversation, she embraces it, confident that her work will ultimately speak for itself.
