Nine ports across the Great Lakes received a prestigious award, being recognized for their work, one of those ports is right here in Erie.
The Robert J. Lewis Pacesetter Award was presented to the Western PA Port Authority on Tuesday.

The award goes to ports that have increased their outbound international tonnage cargo during the previous shipping season.
Company Carmeuse Erie Sand and Gravel, along with the Port of Erie, handled over a million tons of cargo in 2025.

“It means we’re doing our job and doing it well. The guys got an extremely robust safety record; they definitely increase every time they handle a bit of cargo. They’re increasing in their job scope. They’re increasing in how well they do have their efficiency, so on and so forth. So, every time we handle it; it gets quicker, it gets safer and that’s what’s being recognized throughout and resulting in more cargo going down towards this direction,” said Matt Foster, the dock operations manager…
