GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man who had previously been deported from the U.S. has pleaded guilty to a predawn shooting in Alpine Township last year that left a woman dead and two others injured.
Gilberto Hernandez-Mendez admitted to killing his girlfriend’s mother and wounding two others in what police initially called a “domestic dispute” in February 2025. Now, he’s facing at least three decades behind bars as part of a sentencing agreement.
During an appearance in Kent County Circuit Court Monday, Hernandez-Mendez, 43, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and a weapons offense. He also pleaded no contest to a third count of attempted murder and to a charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
