A corner store at 17th and Wharton Streets in Point Breeze has no visible signage, mismatched floor tiles and shelves lined with soda bottles and canned soup. It also has, by growing consensus, the best chicken sandwich in Philadelphia.
The store is owned by Linda Cong, 50, and Jimmy Cong, 53, a couple who are both southern Chinese from Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City. They took the shop over from Jimmy’s sister more than a decade ago. The sister, known as “Mrs. Lee,” first opened it in 1986.
The $9 sandwich and a whisper network
The sandwich costs $9 and consists of two chicken breast cutlets, thickly breaded with a crunchy exterior, served on two slices of potato bread. Ordering it “with everything” adds pickles, mayo, onion, tomato and lettuce. The Congs now sell about 50 a day.
“It’s just salt, pepper, flour, water, and garlic powder,” Linda Cong told the Inquirer in a profile of the store. She has met the sudden interest with amusement…
