The Big Blue Bug, affectionately known as Nibbles Woodaway, on Interstate 95 in Providence, has been an icon since 1979. New England Pest Control commissioned the 9-foot-high termite model as a marketing tool after founder Stephan Goldman moved the company’s office close to the highway. Over the years, Nibbles Woodaway has turned from a local marketing stunt to an icon, enriching the local history, as sourced from the Providence Journal.
After studying termites under a microscope for New England Pest Control, designer and ad marketer George Cardono noticed that the swarm of termites took on a purple hue that eventually faded into a blue hue; thus, he chose to design the mascot for the company to look like a big blue bug.
New England Pest Control embraced the name and color. Because locals associated the termite mascot with the pest control company, New England Pest Control changed its name to Big Blue Bug Solutions in 2012 and adopted Nibbles Woodaway as its official mascot.&;…
