Hunt for Worcester’s top dog afoot at 15th Hot Dog Safari

Hot dogs, franks, tube steaks, glizzies – whatever you want to call them, if you like to eat them, if you want to combat hunger in Worcester County or both, the 15th annual Worcester Hot Dog Safari on Aug. 15 is the event for you.

Co-founder Tom Mahoney, who put together the first Hot Dog Safari with family and friends in 2011, said last year’s Hot Dog Safari raised more than $13,000 for the Worcester County Food Bank, and the cherry (or chili) on top was the sight of participants with full bellies celebrating afterward at Ralph’s Rock Diner.

“Looking out over the crowd, seeing all those people there, is always my favorite memory every year,” Mahoney said. “I’m sure when you ask me next time, it will be looking over the crowd of this year.”

A regional draw

Each August, hot dog stands and restaurants across Worcester County enter the safari to compete for best hot dog in town, and over the course of one day, hot dog enthusiasts roam Worcester County, sample the goods and vote on a winner…
