A two-vehicle crash landed in the middle of the intersection of Northwest 13th Street and Classen Boulevard early Wednesday morning, sending at least one person to paramedics and snarling traffic through one of Oklahoma City’s busiest northwest corridors. Several crews, including firefighters and a tow truck, responded to the scene, and the person’s condition remained unknown as of the latest update.
The crash happened near the crosswalk at NW 13th and Classen, according to Sky 5 footage cited by KOCO, whose chief pilot, Chase Rutledge, captured the aftermath from the air as paramedics worked to help at least one person at the scene. The station’s report does not specify what led to the collision or how many people were hurt beyond the single confirmed patient.
A Corner Planners Have Long Flagged as Confusing
The intersection sits at a spot urban planners have singled out for years as a headache for drivers. A 2015 study by the Institute for Quality Communities found that driver confusion is common where Classen Boulevard curves near NW 13th Street, in part because traffic signals there prioritize north-south vehicle movement over east-west crossings. Community workshops cited in that research identified the curve as a persistently complex spot for both commuters and pedestrians navigating the crosswalk.
The area has also seen its share of physical changes in recent years. In October 2024, the city permanently closed southbound Western Avenue at NW 13th Street and Classen Boulevard to make way for private real estate development, altering vehicle access points just outside Midtown. Classen Boulevard is far from a quiet side street. It doubles as the spine of EMBARK’s RAPID NW Bus Rapid Transit line, a 9.5-mile route that launched in December 2023 and relies on transit signal prioritization at 38 intersections to move buses through heavy traffic.
