Gig Harbor couple’s move went sideways. Then the retired police chief stepped in

Former Gig Harbor Police Chief Kelly Busey’s days of detective work were supposed to be behind him. But when a family moving to Florida this summer nearly lost their belongings to auction, he stepped out of retirement.

You might say this case was personal. Busey is longtime family friends with the married couple, according to a lawsuit filed Aug. 10 in Pierce County Superior Court. The couple initially paid $5,600 to a moving company to drive their belongings across the country from Gig Harbor.

On June 26, two people arrived at their home, packed family heirlooms and personal belongings into a truck and drove away. According to the lawsuit, the couple expected delivery to their new Florida residence by July 18. But they didn’t let their things go without a little insurance…
