A person carrying a knife was arrested outside Lake Shore Middle School in Jacksonville on Wednesday, just before dismissal, after campus security identified the individual as someone who was not a parent or staff member. The person never made it inside the building and had no contact with students, according to school officials.
School security personnel spotted the individual outside the campus and, working with Duval County School Police, detained the armed person before he or she could gain access to the school, as reported by News4JAX. A search of the individual turned up a knife, and the school police department made the arrest without incident. The station reported that the encounter happened on the campus at 2519 Bayview Road, which serves grades 6 through 8 under Principal Dr. Latasha Clark.
Principal Clark sent a message to families informing them of what happened, emphasizing the importance of keeping parents and staff informed about potential threats to safety on campus. Per the same account, she said the incident was not the type of message the school wanted to send on the first day back. Wednesday marked only the third day of classes for Duval County Public Schools, which officially opened its 2026–2027 school year on August 10 under Superintendent Dr. Christopher Bernier.
