Pittsburgh Black Girls RUN! chapter offers “fellowship” and fresh air

In Highland Park, visitors can find statues, a playground, and, for those who are willing to wake up early, they’re likely to see members of the Pittsburgh chapter of Black Girls RUN! Dashing by in pursuit of community and better health.

As a national organization with a Pittsburgh presence, the organization was founded in 2009 to find an inclusive way to combat health disparities amongst Black women. As the title suggests, this means that members of all experience levels come together to run. For some members, this takes shape in hour-long runs through the park every Saturday morning, while others look to the group for help training for races.

Whether someone has a casual or competitive relationship with running, Cheryl Rice Morand, an organizer for the Pittsburgh chapter, tells Pittsburgh City Paper that whether you’re a beginner, a person who spent years running marathons, or even someone who needs to walk, Black Girls RUN! is happy to have you…
