Houston ISD’s Board of Managers declared 12 properties as surplus, allowing those properties to be put up for sale, including nine schools that closed just two months ago.
The move follows at least 16 HISD properties totaling more than 300 acres placed on the market in 2025. Much of that land, including three former schools, sold in December, though HISD did not disclose for how much. Families in communities with closing schools have worried how long the properties will stand empty and what will replace the shuttered campuses.
