FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — At the Dorothy Gilmore Adaptive Recreation Center, participants are getting their hands dirty and growing something bigger than vegetables.
The center recently launched a therapeutic raised garden bed program designed to teach people with disabilities how to grow fruits and vegetables while supporting their social, emotional, and physical well-being.
The garden features wheelchair-accessible raised beds, allowing participants to roll up to the plants and work in the garden independently.
“This is our baby,” said Mallory Schroer, supervisor at the Dorothy Gilmore Adaptive Recreation Center. “We threw some onions. We threw some, like, different things in there to hopefully help the soil.”…
