Tropical Storm Lala Approaches Hawaii, Expected to Strengthen into Hurricane
HONOLULU, Hawaii – Tropical Storm Lala is advancing toward the Hawaiian Islands and is forecasted to intensify into a Category 1 hurricane as it nears the Big Island this Saturday. With sustained winds currently at 65 mph, Lala is nearing the threshold of 75 mph needed to be classified as a hurricane.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports that Lala is moving west-northwest at 13 mph over the Pacific Ocean, with a central pressure of 991 millibars. Residents across the islands should prepare for increasingly severe weather conditions starting Saturday, as the storm makes landfall on the Big Island and continues to affect the region throughout the weekend.
Authorities warn of significant flooding, high winds, and dangerous storm surges. Coastal areas can expect 1 to 3 feet of storm surge, accompanied by rough surf and hazardous waves. Heavy rainfall poses a major concern, with widespread totals of 5 to 8 inches expected, and amounts between 12 and 18 inches-and possibly up to 25 inches in higher elevations and windward locations-raising the risk of life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
In response, Hawaii Governor Josh Green declared a State of Emergency on Thursday, emphasizing the serious threat Lala presents, particularly to Hawai‘i Island.
Currently, a Hurricane Warning is in effect for the Big Island. Tropical Storm Warnings cover Maui County-including Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe-as well as Oahu and Kauai County, including Kauai and Niihau.
