LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The Severe Weather Center is tracking an active weather pattern that will bring chances for showers and thunderstorms into the new workweek, with strong to severe storm potential Monday evening into Tuesday across Nebraska.
Monday: Comfortable Start, Strong Storms Late
Monday will begin seasonally pleasant across Nebraska. Lows will drop to the upper 50s to low 60s overnight, giving residents a comfortable start to the day. There could be some areas of patchy dense fog in far eastern Nebraska.
Afternoon highs will be typical for mid-August, reaching the mid to upper 80s across most of the state. Western Nebraska could see a few spots push into the lower 90s. Humidity and dew points will remain reasonable after lower moisture values returned Sunday. Look for mostly sunny skies with a southwest wind at 5 to 15 MPH for most.
The main story Monday is the strong to severe storm threat into the evening. The Storm Prediction Center has most of the state under a Marginal Risk for severe weather, with a Slight Risk stretching from North Platte into parts of north central and northeastern Nebraska. Scattered strong to severe storms will develop by late afternoon across central Nebraska, with activity moving into northeast Nebraska by midnight to 1 a.m. Tuesday. Large hail, damaging winds, and locally heavy rain are the primary threats – but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Storms should generally push to the east and southeast into late Monday evening.
Lincoln residents should monitor the forecast closely. Most of the strong thunderstorms will occur to our west and northwest, but storms could push through the Lincoln area are expected late Monday night — likely after midnight — and would be weakening as they move through southeastern Nebraska.
Tuesday: More Widespread Severe Threat…
