WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Abilene unveiled a monument on Sunday to honor one of the most famous lawmen in the Old West and the town’s former marshal.
James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok was known for upholding the law and his quick draw. In 1871, he was hired by Abilene city leaders to be marshal and clean up what was one of the busiest cowtowns in America. He held the position for eight months.

Now, there is a monument standing in Old Abilene Town celebrating Wild Bill and the legacy he left in Kansas.
“Wild Bill Hickok is a name people around the world recognize, but Abilene is one of the places where his legend was made,” Julie Roller Weeks, director of the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau, said. “This monument gives visitors another reason to discover that story right here, in the town where Hickok once walked Texas Street and served as marshal.”…
