MCD dam system manages billions of gallons of floodwater

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The severe weather ravaging the Midwest over the past week has left some communities with historic floods, but thanks to the Miami Conservancy District, the Miami Valley is well-protected.

The MCD has confirmed that it’s seen at least three billion gallons of floodwater, but the total number hasn’t been finalized yet.

The Conservancy District was founded after the Great Flood of 1913, and they maintain five 100-year-old dry dams across the Miami Valley. This includes dams at Loramie Creek in Shelby County, the Great Miami River at Taylorsville near Vandalia, Stillwater River near Englewood, Mad River down the river from Wright-Patterson AFB, and Twin Creek in Germantown.
