Mobile mulls GPS system to automatically shut down golf carts veering too close to sensitive areas

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The City Council on Tuesday plans to vote on a proposal to purchase GPS devices that will monitor golf carts on the city’s public course – and, if necessary, shut them down.

Under the $68,115 contract with Tagmarshal International Ltd., an invisible fence would block greens, driving tees and other no-go areas at Azalea City Golf Course. Shonnda Smith, executive director of public works, said the geofencing system would offer a layer of protection beyond good intentions.

After the initial start-up costs, Smith said, the system would cost taxpayers about $13,000 every other year. But she added that she believes the system would pay for itself with money saved on repairs to damage caused by wayward golf carts…
