An injured man was rescued after falling down an elevator shaft in an abandoned Pennsylvania building with no light or ventilation, officials said.
The Pittsburgh Public Safety Department said EMS, Fire and Police responded at around 2:30 p.m. Thursday to an abandoned building on the 900 block of River Avenue for a report that a man had fallen approximately 8–12 feet down an elevator shaft.
Rescuers found the man in the pit of the elevator shaft, and although he was conscious, one leg had been pinned “for an unknown period of time.” Due to the lack of ventilation, crews first tested air quality for contaminants to ensure the safety of the patient and the rescuers.
