SF Camerawork, a legacy business operating since 1974, announces plans to close

SF Camerawork, a celebrated San Francisco photography institution that’s exhibited work from groundbreaking artists since 1974, announced plans to shutter by the end of the month, a public statement on its website reads.

“After more than fifty years as one of the nation’s leading independent organizations dedicated to contemporary photography, SF Camerawork will close its doors at the end of August 2026,” the statement posted earlier this month says. “We share this news with deep gratitude for all that this organization has meant to artists and audiences, and with profound sadness for what this moment represents.”

“The relationships formed here — between artists, viewers, curators, and supporters — have been the organization’s greatest achievement,” the statement continues, adding that rising operational costs and the decline in public funding ultimately led to the closure. “… SF Camerawork is not alone in facing these pressures; arts organizations across the country are confronting similar challenges. Despite the determined efforts of our staff, Board, artists, donors, and supporters to secure a sustainable future, we have reached the difficult conclusion that we can no longer continue operations.”…
