West Baton Rouge Parish man sentenced after body found burned in sugarcane field

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Brusly man will be spending the next 49 years in prison in connection with the death of Ja’Morius Mitchell.

District Judge Tonya Lurry sentenced Tyler Davis, 20, of Brusly, after he pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, manslaughter, and unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling.

According to District Attorney Tony Clayton’s office, on Dec. 12, 2024, Mitchell was shot to death in a sugarcane field located in West Baton Rouge Parish. After the shooting, Davis set fire to the cane field in an attempt to get rid of any evidence along with Mitchell’s body.
