Newark facing $2.3 million budget gap, hike for property tax, trash collection fees being considered

Newark has cleared about $4 million off of their proposed budget gap for next year, but there’s still a lot of hard choices coming for Delaware’s third-largest city.

Newark said during a June discussion on lodging taxes that they were facing a $6 million budget gap for their FY 2027, but as they began official budget discussions on Monday night, that had been cut to $2.3 million.

Newark is proposing a $126,971,623 Operating Budget in 2027, up just 0.3% from this year, but will add $3.2 million to its Capital Budget to help primarily with water and sewer projects…
