ZZ Top Drummer Frank Beard Dies at 77, Band Mourns Loss

Additional Coverage:

Frank Beard, the longtime drummer for ZZ Top, has passed away at the age of 77, the band confirmed.

While the cause of death has not been disclosed, the band’s publicist shared that Beard was in hospice care and died Monday at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by family.

Beard was a founding member of ZZ Top, alongside guitarist Billy Gibbons and bassist Dusty Hill, forming the iconic rock group in 1969. Hill passed away in 2021 and was succeeded by his longtime bass technician, Elwood Francis, per his wishes.

Billy Gibbons paid tribute to Beard, saying, “Today, Elwood and I lost a great friend and collaborator, and the world lost one of the most naturally innovative drummers and a great and true son of Texas. His signature backbeat was key to keeping ZZ on top.”

In light of Beard’s passing, the band has canceled upcoming shows in Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs. However, the tour is set to continue this weekend at Austin City Limits, a venue and city that held special meaning for Beard.
