New questions arise after more than 50 decomposing bodies found at South Chicago Chapel

CHICAGO — After a South Side funeral home with a documented history of misconduct was shut down for mishandling bodies, new questions arise about why state regulators didn’t step in sooner.

A little over a week ago, more than 50 decomposing bodies were found inside a Southeast Side funeral home, leaving dozens of families searching for answers about what happened to their loved ones.

It was a request for assistance made by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) with a “license investigation” that brought officers to the South Chicago Chapel, located in the 2900 block of East 95th Street, according to the Chicago Police Department. Once inside the building, the bodies were found.
