Detroit’s Vecino Named Among Best Mexican Restaurants in the US by The New York Times

Vecino in Midtown Detroit secured a coveted position on the New York Times list of 41 of the Greatest Mexican Restaurants Across the United States, published on Aug. 13. The two-year-old eatery was chosen as Michigan’s sole representative on this prestigious ranking. This restaurant features traditional Mexican fare with an upscale modern flair. The New York Times article shows a shift in consumer attitudes toward Mexican food as traditional/modern Mexican fare replaces Tex/Mex.

Brett Anderson penned the New York Times feature. He traced the story back to co-owner of Vecino, Adriana Jiménez, and her ties to Mexico City, where her family escaped brutality during the 1990s before landing in Detroit’s southwest neighborhood.

“Vecino opened two years ago in Midtown Detroit, but its roots run to the city’s working-class southwest,” said Anderson, according to the Detroit News. “That’s where Adriana Jiménez, a co-owner, spent much of her childhood, in a family of restaurateurs who fled violence in Mexico City in the 1990s.”…
