TN audit reveals what happens to cigarettes seized by state

NASHVILLE, Tenn.. (WKRN) — Tennessee officials pulled 176 contraband tobacco products from local markets in recent years, according to a new state audit. The report also shared what happened to them.

Revenue officers seize tobacco as contraband when they find unstamped cigarettes, untaxed tobacco products, or brands that aren’t listed in the state’s approved tobacco manufacturers directory.

If the contraband’s manufacturer is listed in the directory, the cigarettes can be auctioned in quantities of five cartons or more.
