DC’s Carter Barron Amphitheater welcomes back crowds after decade-long closure

Now, music is returning to the historic venue, as organizers bring it back to life for three nights starting Thursday with the help of a temporary stage and some familiar local performers.

Built in 1950 as part of Washington’s 150th anniversary celebration, Carter Barron was one of only three locations in Washington that was not segregated when it opened, according to Rock Creek Conservancy Executive Director Dan Puskar. It later hosted everyone from Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington to Bruce Springsteen and D.C.’s own Chuck Brown.
