‘It was harrowing’: Video shows Sarasota police rescuing captain from sailboat in severe weather

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — A routine marine rescue took a dramatic turn when the weather turned bad, and Sarasota police officers discovered not everyone was off the boat. Body camera video captured them rescuing the captain.

Sarasota Police Marine Patrol responded to a call off South Lido Beach, near Big Pass, around 8:15 p.m. on July 28.

“It gets a little sticky out there,” said Sarasota Police Marine Patrol Officer Ron Dixon. “There was a small craft advisory going on, so the waves were probably threes and fours hitting the beaches and the sandbars that were out there. He had miscalculated and ran aground, so his sailboat was getting pretty banged up.”

One person from the sailboat made it safely to shore, so officers checked to see if anyone else was on board…
