BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The state and federal investigation into properties that may be contaminated with radioactive waste is expanding southward into Erie County after screenings of hundreds of properties in Niagara County and Grand Island.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Tuesday that crews will begin evaluating “areas of interest” for possible radioactive contamination in Aurora, Boston, Brant, Concord, Eden, Evans, Hamburg, Marilla and Orchard Park.

The agencies said the designation of an area of interest does not mean the properties have contamination.
“It means the agencies observed radiological measurements that require closer ground-level evaluation and more information is needed,” the agencies said in a joint statement. “Agencies will not access properties without permission and will keep residents informed throughout the process if screening is allowed.”…
