A San Diego Trail Group Is Organizing Recovery Help for Fire-Scarred Peñasquitos Canyon

The San Diego Mountain Biking Association is organizing a community coalition to help restore Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve after two fires burned a combined 228 acres of the trail system this summer.

A fire that broke out around 3:15 p.m. Aug. 16 between Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Carmel Mountain Road grew to 138 acres and forced evacuations before crews brought it to 91% containment by Aug. 19, according to NBC San Diego. It burned through the same stretch of canyon a June fire had already scorched, a blaze that charred roughly 90 acres nearby.

San Diego police arrested and charged Brandon James Glasgo, 30, with intentionally starting the August fire, saying witnesses reported seeing him near where it began. But Cal Fire’s own incident page still lists the fire’s cause as under investigation, a distinction from the criminal charge…
