City of Salem files for preliminary injunction to stop planned drawdown of Detroit Reservoir

The city of Salem has filed a motion for a preliminary injunction in an effort to stop the planned drawdown of Detroit Lake this fall.

The city said it filed the motion Friday in U.S. District Court in hopes of preventing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ plan from starting until final decisions on the initial case are made. The Corps is seeking to draw Detroit Lake lower than usual over the next few years to help two endangered salmon species migrate.

But if that happens, the city said, the resulting level of sediment will prevent them from filtering and processing the water, causing “irreparable harm to the City’s water treatment facilities.”…
