Nostalgic, dependable, family-friendly, and universally beloved—a Southern pancake house has all the ingredients needed to start the morning. Steeped in history and maple syrup, there are few places busier on a weekend than your local pancake house. Though they’re not exclusive to our region, we are under the impression that Southern pancake houses have a little something on all the rest. For one, any place you can order pancakes with a side of biscuits and gravy earns extra marks in our book. And secondly, in a place that’s meant to feel warm and inviting, there’s nothing better than hearing your waitress ask, “What’re you havin’ darlin’?” in a Southern drawl. Here we celebrate 10 legendary pancake houses across the South (listed in no particular order) that serve a mean short stack and make you feel right at home. Did your favorite make the list? Let us know!
Magnolia Pancake Haus
San Antonio, Texas
There are no reservations at this popular San Antonio spot, but their self-proclaimed “world’s best buttermilk biscuits” are more than worthy of the wait. In its 25 years, the restaurant has opened two additional area locations to help feed the masses. You can get nearly any breakfast food imaginable at the “Haus”, but the pancakes remain the best seller. Have yours studded with everything from blueberries and chocolate chips to Texas pecans or Applewood smoked bacon crumbles.
