VSP: Charlotte man charged in I-77 shooting injuring two sisters

CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – A 61-year-old Charlotte, North Carolina man was charged in Saturday’s shooting on Interstate 77 in Carroll County that injured two sisters, according to the Virginia State Police.

Troopers said Richard T. Ariviello was taken into custody and was charged with:

  • Malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle
  • Shooting from a vehicle
  • Maliciously causing bodily harm to another with intent to maim
  • Use of a firearm while committing a felony

Around 8:50 a.m. on Aug. 22, troopers were contacted regarding a shooting along northbound I-77 at the three-mile marker; the shooting followed a reported road rage incident, according to VSP.

After shots were fired, VSP alleges that a Mercedes-Benz driven by Ariviello drove away from the scene; the vehicle was then stopped by law enforcement at Exit 19 on the interstate.

Two sisters, 12 and 20 years old, who were passengers in a Jeep sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were transported to a hospital, according to state police…
