Schools announce closures and delays following weekend storms

Schools in Shelby County and nearby regions are adjusting their schedules on Monday as the area continues to recover from widespread power outages and storm damage.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) announced on Sunday evening that all schools and district offices will be closed on Monday, August 24. The district reported that over 30 power outages were impacting more than 40 schools and administrative buildings, and restoration efforts are ongoing.

The closure comes as MLGW continues working to restore power across the area. During a news conference Sunday, MLGW President and CEO Doug McGowen said outages could continue to affect schools in the coming week and that school leaders were receiving updates from the utility every three hours…
