1818 — Quapaw Nation cedes millions of acres. On August 24, 1818, Quapaw leaders and U.S. commissioners William Clark and Auguste Chouteau concluded a treaty at St. Louis under which the Quapaw relinquished an enormous territory encompassing much of present-day Arkansas and adjoining lands. The Quapaw retained a comparatively small reservation in southeastern Arkansas between Arkansas Post, the Arkansas River, Ouachita River and Saline River. The Arkansas Secretary of State’s historical materials identify the August 24 treaty as one of the major Native American land cessions that shaped Arkansas.
1863 — Union troops capture Confederate Gen. Jeff Thompson at Pocahontas. During the Pocahontas Expedition, Union cavalry raided Pocahontas in Randolph County on August 24, 1863, and captured Missouri State Guard Brig. Gen. Meriwether “Jeff” Thompson.
