Retrial begins for Hampton man charged with killing popular Kecoughtan HS  teacher

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Fourteen months after his first murder trial ended in a hung jury, Calvin Jackson is on trial once again for the 2023 killing of teacher Joi Brown.

Mixed verdict for man accused of killing Hampton teacher

Brown was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head, lying next to her bed in the house on Wendell Drive that the couple shared.

Jackson was arraigned on a general murder statute, which gives the Commonwealth discretion in its prosecution. Prosecutors say they are pursuing a first-degree murder conviction for Jackson.

Witnesses who were friends of the couple testified Monday that the final months of Brown’s life were troubled with domestic violence, and with Jackson tracking her movements…
